Adoption Fees range from $45 for puppies and kittens, to $60 to $85 for dogs and cats. Adoption fee includes rabies vaccine and microchip. Rescue pull fee is $20 per animal and includes rabies vaccine and microchip. Any additional vetting such as heartworm tests or distemper/parvo vaccine is the responsibility of the adopter or rescue.

TO TAG FOR RESCUE, YOU MUST EMAIL ANIMAL CONTROL. AC@BIGSPRINGPD.NET. You will also be required to provide proof of 501c3 status and fill out a rescue contract.

Puppies are vaccinated for distemper/parvo upon intake. Any additional vetting is the responsibility of the adopter or rescue.

There is no on staff veterinarian at this shelter. Animals ARE NOT spayed/neutered before leaving the facility. Adopters or rescues are responsible to have animals altered within 30 days or by 6 months of age per the animal control rescue/adoption contract.

The shelter DOES NOT arrange transport nor does it hold or board animals. For transport suggestions, please pm the Big Spring Animal Rescue page and we can TRY to assist or give suggestions. You WILL BE REQUIRED to have transport, pick up, or temp foster pre-arranged in order to adopt or tag for rescue.

Please, please, please DO NOT call animal control unless to inquire about an animal, to adopt or to tag. Calling to harass animal control, yell at the shelter worker or animal control officers does not help the animals nor our progressively improving relationship with the shelter. We understand your passion, but are trying so very hard to keep moving towards a positive goal.

For updated information about the progress made at the Big Spring Animal Shelter and future developments, please pm the Big Spring Animal Rescue page.

Rescue crossposting, like any other activity that helps change the world, isn’t without its ins and outs that people need to learn. I’ve decided to do a series of blog posts that address some do’s and dont’s where it comes to rescue crossposting, particularly on Facebook.

These posts will address:

  • How to figure out what’s in a crosspost and who posted the original
  • Things to avoid doing that create additional headaches for all concerned
  • Best practices for sharing both on and off Facebook

Stay tuned, and yes, you’ll be welcome to link to and share these posts to help yourr own crossposting page or group

It happens to the best of us in the rescue crossposting world: an irate animal lover who finds out that an animal is euth-listed takes to the Facebook post to hurl verbal abuse at the poster. Accusations of being responsible for the killing when you actually aren’t, often accompanied by f-bombs and threats, might make you wonder if your efforts are worth it.

The good news? They are always worth it. The angry rants from your page’s followers show that there is a passion to save the animals – it’s just that the anger is misdirected and often does little to help.

This is an educational opportunity, folks – explain that you aren’t the pound in question, as well as constructive ways that they can help by sharing, pledging, and tagging. Remember, many of these folks think that their complains are a. seen by shelter staff and b. will stop the euthanasia.

Encourage positive means of helping these animals, and point out how heaping verbal abuse on the shelter staff does little or nothing to help. There will always be a few trolls who just want to argue for the sake of arguing, but they are, thankfully, usually few and far in between.
