The The World Society for the Protection of Animals, Animal Disaster Response Team and Japan Animal Welfare Society have been working together to provide shelter for animals left homeless as a result of the earthquake and tsunami. It’s estimated that about 30,000 animals may need shelter. The groups have been trying to set up emergency shelters for pets close to evacuation centers for their owners.
I think it’s good to see such a concentrated effort being made. While I know Japan isn’t nearly as populated as the U.S., it’s encouraging to see a situation where pets don’t have to be left behind in a disaster area. Maybe some more advanced planning would allow for pets to be housed in close proximity to emergency shelters in the event of a disaster.
What do you think would be good ways to ensure that animals aren’t left behind in a disaster?
